My quest to become thinner and healthier

Not a bad number, I felt like I did well this week … got in a great run on Tuesday night, but overdid it snacking on Wednesday, so I’m glad to have a loss.

Planning on a nice run this weekend, might even try to squeeze in two runs, based on what the weather will be like!

7/25 Workout: Amazingly Long Run 25 July 2010

Since Liam slept in yesterday until 8am, I ended up putting my run off til this morning when I could get up a little earlier and take advantage of the “cooler” morning temps. Mind you, it was still hotter than hell out, but not as bad as yesterday. I managed to get in over 3 miles, though I don’t know the official distance because my watch died. Still, I’m proud of myself for getting out there and completing a run despite ridiculous temperatures!

I haven’t been here in a couple weeks, and it looks like my trist in the 170’s has passed … in all seriousness, I knew that was a sudden drop and didn’t expect it to stick around.  I was 181-ish the week after and 182-ish the week after that.  Unfortunately, these past three weeks have consisted of a LOT of eating dinner out, which has resulted in some gains.  I’m not pleased with it, but we’ve got two weeks now with no weekend plans and very little mid-week plans, so I’m hoping to see some better numbers in the coming weeks.

On a side note, I did something that I swore I’d never do again: I joined Weight Watchers.  Technically, I joined about a month ago, but I only went for two weeks.  Being lifetime, I’m allowed to only show up once a month, and although I intend to show up a little more often than that, this hasn’t been the best month for it.  I’m partly joining to support my mom who has been going for a couple of months now and has lost 30 pounds (yay Mom!), but also because I know the plan works, its just that I also know that I can become obsessive about it.  The last time I did WW, I ended up spending all day with my stomach in knots over how many POINTs I’d eaten and where the next ones would come from.  It wasn’t worth it.  My biggest problem with WW is the fact that my original 80 pounds were lost with very minimal exercise and the loss included the consumption of a lot of 100-calorie packs and Lean Cuisine meals, both of which I am now (and rightly so) vehemently against.  I want to do this by still eating foods that I won’t feel bad feeding to Liam.  I’d never give him a fat-free yogurt or a diet juice, there’s too much crap in it.  He’s a healthy little boy and I’m not putting that in jeopardy by pumping him full of shit he doesn’t need.  Instead, I’m trying to do this a more natural way – eating more fruits and veggies, cutting portions back, and (this is the hard one for me) snacking less.

In all, this was a poor month to decide to join; Will and I are trying very hard to redecorate the kitchen and family room (basically, the entire back end of our home), and we’re spending a lot of time browsing furniture, tile, granite, carpets, cabinets, etc.  For the most part, that has resulted in us traveling right after work to a shop about an hour away, grabbing some sort of food on the way there, or running to the shop and then stopping for a sit-down meal, at which point we’re so hungry we’re eating every roll on the table (and considering the rolls on the next table).  We’re planning on doing the upgrades between August and September, so there is an end in sight, but its not near enough for my comfort.  There’s a beach visit and a wedding in between now and then, and while I don’t expect to be a rail for either of those events, it would be nice to know that I won’t be coming back from them looking like the Sta-Puf Marshmallow Man.

So, Weight Watchers will hopefully at least keep me in check for this time period and then kick into gear in the fall.  If I can stay around 180-183 through the summer, I’ll be content.  I’ll kick back into loss mode in the fall and hope for the best.

In the meantime, I have been running regularly despite my obvious lack of posting here.  Its been hot, so I’ve been slow, but I’ve been out there.  I’m definitely feeling more confident on my runs than I was this time last year, so I’m pleased with that.  I might not be going a further distance yet, but confidence is key – that’ll lead me to bigger and better things.

7/7 Workout: I’m Freaking Nuts 8 July 2010

Yep, went out anyway tonight.  I believe the official temperature was 99 degrees when I got back from my run, which for good reason wasn’t very long or very fast.  I just did a single 1.6 mile lap around my neighborhood, just something to get myself moving and to keep my leg muscles used to hitting the pavement.  I was actually quite proud of myself for getting out there, though by the end of it, I was really glad that I had decided to make it a quick, easy run!!  I can’t wait for this heat wave to break!

7/5 Workout: Damn Hot Run 7 July 2010

Filed under: Feel the Burn — lennonzgal @ 00:57

Okay, honestly, I don’t know what possessed me to think it was a good idea to run yesterday.  I mean, I’m all for heat tolerance and everything, but even at 9am when I got out to run, it was hotter than hell out there.  I did, however, make it about 3.1+ miles, which is great.  I was really proud of myself, and I feel comfortable finding a good 5k to run now, and it doesn’t matter what the temperature will be!

That said, I’m thinking that I might reconsider tomorrow’s run … its supposed to be 101 tomorrow, and I’m starting to think that even at night, that’s not a good thing.  Perhaps tomorrow will be a better evening for a brisk walk and then a round of Hip Hop Abs.

07/03 Workout: Run, Thwarted! 4 July 2010

Filed under: Feel the Burn — lennonzgal @ 13:49

I actually did get a run in – 2.9 miles.  I was planning on running 3 miles, but at exactly 2.9, a bee swooped in and got stuck under the brim of my hat – it took me half a second to pull the hat off, but in that half-second, the bee stung me.  Here’s the thing – I’m allergic to mosquito bites (my mosquito bites generally blow up to the size of a half-dollar), and I’ve had several doctors tell me to be careful of bees, because if I react badly to mosquitoes, I likely will react badly to bees.  Thankfully, I was two doors away from home at the time, so I turned and ran home, just a little panicky.  I popped a benadryl, and aside from the sting hurting like hell, I am glad to announce that I am not, in fact, allergic to bees!

The rest of the run was nice though, I averaged about 13:00/miles, which was great.  And I know that I could have gone the full 3 miles, probably even more than that, so I feel confident about signing up for another 5k.  I also feel like I can muddle through what is turning out to be one hotter-than-hell summer.  Now that I have plowed through nearly 3 miles again, I’m going to try and force myself to get through it in the heat, albeit probably a bit slower.  That’s okay though, fast or slow, three miles is three miles, right?

Speaking of, I’ve had a couple people email me and comment here about how they couldn’t run in 80+ degree weather, and I wanted to mention two things that might help (though maybe its just an unwillingness, which I can totally understand … I’m a summer person though and don’t mind the heat as much): first, remember that I follow the Galloway Method, even though I’m not yet marathon training … I do find the run-walk-run rotation to make me feel more confident in running, and I do believe that I run faster in my runs at that point because I know I only need to run for 5 minutes before I get a 1 minute walk in.  You can withstand almost anything for 5 minutes.  On top of that, I have a Nathan Hydration Belt (in pink, of course) – one of the bottles has a little bit of gatorade in it, while the other has water – I sip a little gatorade during each walk, and I do swear that it helps.  I don’t chug it; the stuff has a lot of calories, and I don’t think I need that much, but in this heat, I do think that I need at least some replenishment!

Anyway, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.  Based on how damn hot it is tomorrow morning, I’m thinking I might try and fit in another run … it does feel really good to get that much exercise in!

So, I knew for a fact that last week was a bit of a fluke, but I was quite surprised to see such a low number this morning.  Even though I don’t stop in here every day, I do still get on the scale each morning, and I did notice that my weight dropped significantly once the humidity broke.  I would love to know if there’s a study on such a phenomenon.  I guess we’ll see what next week brings with its 97 degree heat and tons of humidity.  I’m secretly hoping though that I continue to remain in the 170’s for a bit …
